End of the year already...?

Wow, so very sorry I haven't been around here in a long while. I had even forgotten my login info, dang! I'm thinking of reformatting things a little differently for this blog thing. Maybe more of a story blog to go along with the new art coming out. I'll have to figure that one out. Seems like the end of the year is always filled with so much activity. Quite a bit to tell you about for November and a bit in December. Here are some of these things: ^ First off, I will be part of a shared exhibit titled Into the Mystic at Gallery1988 in San Francisco. It'll feature my new work(shown above) alongside Jeremiah Ketner, Jonathan Bergeron aka Johnny Crap, and Ken Keirns. As I spent the past few months working on this body, a story begun to unveil itself with each new piece. The further I got, the more the story deepened. Now, it's overtaken my mind and will spill over into upcoming events, the majority of it appearing in my April 2010 solo exhibit. Here is the basic idea of the story so far, but it really thickens further down: I've imagined an environment where the plant-life of our world has been altered. Forcing the balance between them and all other inhabitants to be diminished. These organic life-forms that emerge from the ground interweave with the entities that walk our planet. All who breath in air inhale the pollen that moves with the winds. Roots, vines and seeds meld with muscle, blood and bones. The earth is carpeted in an abundance of plants in bloom, each sprouting fresh intelligent beings. The vegetation that has long been deprived and neglected has forged a way to reclaim all that was once their own. – It continues with all sorts of crazy thoughts as I delve deeper. So please come out if you are in and around San Francisco. I'll be at the opening and I believe the other three artists will be there too.

Grandma / Pi

Well I started up this blog and then seemed to abandon it for a while. It was mainly because I spent a lot of time away from work these past few weeks. Things have been a bit rough. My wife had lost her grandmother a few days back. She was suffering from colon cancer and was having a very difficult time with all of her pain. Her name was Concepcion, and she was 80 years old. She was living with us for the past eleven years and in those years she had done so much for our family. Communication between us was hard because we spoke different languages (I don't know enough Spanish), but she was very nurturing and I did understand that well. She used to cook for me when I sat here painting snacking on Cheetos just because she wanted to. She was always pushing us all to do more - more for ourselves and the world. I am happy that all her pains are gone, but I will miss her being here with us. Goodbye Grandma, I know I will see you again and we will be able to speak in any language we choose.

The Planet Illogica/NFFTY Festival - Mark Murphy asked me about a month ago if I'd like to take part in a small exhibit and put together some collateral for the events. I had sent them the good & evil plug image and they turned it into all sorts of cool stuff: t-shirts, posters, cd covers and such. I'll have five paintings on display there (forwarded from Gallery1988LA). The NFFTY event is this weekend (4.24 - 4.26) in Seattle, WA. It was very awesome of Mark to invite me to promote my stuff (thanks much Mark!). If you are an artist please look into signing up with Planet Illogica. They are an awesome bunch of people with great things to offer. Mark gives you all of the details of the project at his blog, plus there's a short interview we did posted there.

I will have one piece based on Dr. Suess's "Cat in the Hat" over at Gallery 1988: San Francisco. They are doing a group exhibit titled "Beyond the Page: Re-illustrating our favorite children's books". The event opens on May 1st and runs through the 23rd. Below is the piece I submitted "My Tricks are Quite Safe". Feel free to contact the gallery if you are interested.

Then on May 8th a four-artist group exhibit opens at The Alcove Contemporary Arts in Atlanta. I will have seven pieces hanging, three which are new. Check out the work on my Flickr site or at the gallery website if you are interested.

Next up I begin working on my show in late July with Kelly Vivanco at Subtext in San Diego. Lots of great stuff to get out so keep posted.

30 March 2009

A fork in the road.

Well, I've decided to try something a bit different for displaying my work online. I've split up the "electronic" stuff from my other work. I was looking at everything and started to see that all of the electrical themed work has reached a point where I am comfortable with how things look and are created. But as for the other side, the side that is still growing, wants to just totally break out and do things I've never tried before. In a way I felt held back and a bit confined by my own restrictions. Although things make look similar in both of these portfolios, to me they feel like totally different beasts. It is strange, but as I realized this recently I began to feel content with how things are with the electrical work and the new stuff I've been doing is not at all afraid to come out. So, I'll continue both. Except I'm allowing each to take its very own path. Not sure this format works best, but I'll test it all out. Please take a look: limon-art.com and let me know your thoughts. Thanks my friends :)

Illustration West 47 Show

Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles' Illustration West 47 Show is this Saturday, March 28th, from 7-11pm with the awards ceremony at 8pm. Since I'm not in LA I always miss out on good things like this, but if your around go to Gallery Nucleus on 210 East Main Street in Alhambra. I was fortunate enough to get two pieces into the competition. "Evolve", which won the silver for the Gallery Category and "Unusual Scholarships" got into the Editorial Category. "Evolve" is a print that was furnished by Thumbtack Press, which I've signed, embossed and framed. The other, "Unusual Scholarships" will be the original piece (acrylic on canvas, 9x12) which has been framed. All the work is only up for a week (ends April 3) so try and make it out!
