Weekly Update
Welcome once again to another week at Sam and Dan Games. Let's get it started!

Game Rebalance
It's about that time again to rebalance the game. The problem that happens is that many of you are higher level so I tend to make the latest levels be a lot harder than they should be at that stage of the game. The problem is that as I add even more content new players can get stuck since the difficulty curve might be too high. What I do to rebalance is start a new game and try to play all the levels. The moment where I feel like I need to start grinding to move on then that level needs to be made easier. Either make the enemy be lower level, or have less health. Ideally in the final game you would never need to grind to beat the story mode.

I'm also retroactively adding TMs for the Gym leaders that you might have beaten.

Legendary Transfers
Last blog I asked in the comments what you wanted to see for this update. Some of you wanted to see the Legendary Beast from PTD1 to be transferred over. So this week we will see Raikou, Entei, Suicune and Victini be added to the transfer list!

New Moves
I won't be able to reach Soft Level cap 37 this week but I will add some of the moves from it, plus a few extra fun moves. Are there any specific moves that you want to be added next week? Let me know in the comments below.

Ilex Forest
The next map will be Ilex Forest. There won't be any new pokemon in it but there will be some pokemon in the wild that we hadn't seen before so that means new behaviours for them. You can expect to battle a pesky Farfetch'd and gain access to HM Cut.

Mystery Gift
Like most weeks, there will be a mystery gift this week. It looks like Ice is winning right now. It is interesting because if Ice wins, there aren't many pure or primary ice type pokemon left. There might not be a choice to vote for.

Cosmoid Update
Some interesting things are happening in the Cosmoids world, I hope to have something new to show you guys in the coming weeks, but for now there is nothing new to announce.

    Back in Action!
It's good to be back! First I want to thank you all for all the kind words that you gave Zaira and I. We had a wonderful wedding and honeymoon. It was a much needed break from work. I'm fully refreshed and ready to make some content!

    PTD2 Update 1.49 Released!
I just finished a new update it contains a lot of goodies for you guys and gals.

    • Pokemon Size Adjustments - This was a long time coming. Usually I would resize pokemon manually and more or less estimate how big or small they should be. What I did was changed it so the sizes are automatically figured out using programming instead of me doing it manually. From 0 to 10 feet units will scale at a faster pace than from 10 or higher feet. If it all scales the same you end up with giant Steelix. So I used rattata to figure out 1 foot and your character represents 5 feet. Then I took my Steelix size and made that the measure for how the bigger pokemon should scale. The outcome is that sizes should be more consistent now. Some pokemon got smaller and some got bigger but should be accurate to the game.
    • Soft Level Cap Increased to 36 - Added 11 new attacks to reach the 36 soft level cap. Please note that pokemon that can learn these attacks will be able to learn them even if they are learned at a higher level than the soft cap.
      • X-Scissor, Megahorn, Shadow Claw, Flash Cannon, Dizzy Punch, Psycho Cut, Whirlpool, Stone Edge, Venoshock, Blaze Kick, and Sludge Bomb.
    • The promised Giveaway Pokemon - This coming week I will be giving away Shiny Tepig, Gothita and Electrike.
    • PTD1 to PTD2 Transfers - 15 new pokemon to transfer over! Go to the PTD1 Pokemon Center to transfer your pokemon from ptd1 to ptd2. Keep in mind you can't transfer them back to PTD1 once you transfer them over.
      • Ponyta, Rapidash, Magnemite, Magneton, Farfetch'd, Doduo, Dodrio, Seel, Dewgong, Grimer, Muk, Shellder, Cloyster, Drowzee, and Hypno.
That's all I have for today, stay tuned for our next blog on Monday! As always let me know what you think!

Coming back from a bad week, more PTD1 to PTD2 transfers, Sun Stone, Level 2 of Cosmoids!

    Last Week's Update/Server Issues
We had a crazy week last week, both in a good and bad way. Let's start with the bad. So instead of telling you the story how it unfolded I will just tell you what the problem was and how it caused all the issues that we had. Okay. So Databases need indexes. Imagine you have a giant book and it has no index. How would you find that page you are looking for without having to go through the whole book? You can't! So I had a tiny database (the one that keeps track of what events you had done in the story) that was missing an index. Initially the database was so small that it didn't matter. But as the game grew in size and in users this database grew. It has over 2 million entries and so every day as the database grew so did the slowdown. It got so slow that our host suspended our account. I told them to put it back up so I could disable all logins while I fixed the problem. I was really conflicted about all this. I'm no expert on databases or server administration so I had very little idea on where to start. Luckily I had bought this book called High Performance MySQL: Optimization, Backups, and Replication. While I didn't have the time to read the whole book or follow everything it had to say, it did give me some ideas on trying to find the problem and how to fix it. After doing some test to see how long each thing took to load I found that loading events was taking way too long even when I was the only user playing the game, which brought the discovery of the missing index on that database. Other than that I made some upgrades to the database engines (I changed from mysam to innodb, for those with database knowledge) that should let more people in at a time. There might be some side effects to these changes that I will have to fix but I'm pretty happy that we are somewhat back to working order.

The good stuff is the new content that I was able to bring to the game. I finally put in running shoes into the game which let you move at twice the speed. (Your pokemon will also move fast, I did have a version where your pokemon wasn't as fast and he would be left behind) You can get the shoes by talking to an old man in Cherrygrove City after you defeat Zapdos there. Another big and daunting task that I had was to add fishing. I actually go the chance to stream while I was making the fishing part and frankly I had no idea how I was going to add fishing. Luckily I'm pretty quick at thinking about how to solve problems and so I thought of a way to add it in and it worked out pretty well. You can now get an old rod or good rod by defeating the fisher man on the second part of Route 32 (Read the FAQ page for more detailed info). Once you have a rod you can go to any water source available in the game and fish on it (press spacebar or z) this will trigger a battle. Things like which rod you are using, which location you are in, time of day will affect who you get to battle with. I basically set it up to mimic the actual game. I'm really happy with how it turned out so I hope you guys can enjoy it.

On top of all of this I added all the generation 1 pokemon that you can capture in PTD2 to the PTD1 to PTD2 transfers. This includes: Jigglypuff, Wigglypuff, Zubat, Golbat, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebell, Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Gastly, Haunter, Gengar, Poliwag, Poliwrath, Krabby, Kingler, Staryu and Starmie. As I do every week there was also a Mystery Gift and a Giveaway pokemon. The Mystery Gift was electric ghost type Rotom and the giveaway was Plusle and Minun. If you got the code in time you would get 2 of each Plusle and Minun. One male and one female.

Last but not least Cosmoids had a nice update. I added more losing conditions, if you let enough bug creatures pass you will lose the level. You can tell how many lives you have left by the heart graphic on the top left. Evan, one of our freelance artist, also did a revision on the grass graphic for the first level. While I thought the original ones looked fine, Dan thought they needed more work. And so Evan did the job and they look great! The other thing I added was a fainting animation to the units. Instead of disappearing you will now see them flip on their backs and then flash before they disappear. These types of details go a long way in making a game. Each of them bringing us closer to a full game.

    What's happening this week:

    Pokemon Center Bugs
I need detailed information about the Pokemon Center Bugs with Breeding, Trading and Picking up pokemon. The more step by step information you can give me the better.

    Mystery Gift
Like every week we will have a mystery gift and a giveaway for the runner up of the poll. You have one day to vote for which of the remaining types should be the new mystery gift. Then I will post specific pokemon that can be the mystery gift and giveaway.

    PTD1 to PTD2 Transfers
My goal this week is to add a lot of Generation 1 Pokemon into PTD2. So this week I plan to add: Vulpix, Ninetails, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Paras, Parasect, Venonat, Venomoth, Diglett, Dugtrio, Meowth, Persian, Psyduck, Golduck, Mankey, Primeape, Growlithe, Arcanine, Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Machop, Machoke, and Machamp. Adding these will make it so that you can get more than half of the Generation 1 Pokemon into PTD2!

    Sun Stone
Since we are adding the Oddish family and Bellossom is part of Generation 2 then I'm also adding the Sun Stone so that Gloom can evolve into Bellossom!

Cosmoids Level Select Screen and Level 2
For Cosmoids this week I want to start work on Level 2. I really want each level to feel different than the others so each level will take some time to create. On level 2 is when you finally get your first creature, but please note that you won't be able to save just yet. Since we will have multiple levels we also need a level select screen. Very similar to PTD1 there will be different chapters. I'm looking forward to making this!

    Latest PTD2 Update v1.37.1
The last PTD2 update again brought us some great new things. We kicked it off with Ditto, Onix and Scyther as new pokemon that you could transfer from ptd1 to ptd2. It goes without saying that Ditto is a great addition since you will be able to breed some of the previously unbreedable pokemon like golett and beldum. I hope their numbers will go up as time passes on. In addition to those I added the Metal Coat item that will enable you to evolve your Onix and Scyther into Steelix and Scizor respectively. The twist is that you need to find the Metal Coat somewhere in the game's story mode maps before you can unlock it to buy in the Item Store. I hope I can add more item hunts in the future like this. Like every week we also had a mystery gift which was Shiny Spheal which you can get all this week (as many as you want!) and we had a very limited giveaway for shiny snorunt. Last but not least I added a new story level to the game. You will battle with a Shadow Entei, watch out for his devastating Mean Lock/Fire ball combo. A small tip is to use pokemon like the Mystery Gift Spheal to take hits of the fireball for other pokemon. Good luck!

    Fundraiser.. slow and steady
I haven't forgotten about the fundraiser but I feel like the prize for the 10 dollar mark just aren't as interesting as Rayquaza was at 5 dollars. What do you guys think would be a worthy prize for the 10 dollar mark? In case you don't know the current prize for 10 dollars is all the previous prizes plus your choice at Cosmoid Starter for your PTD2 account. Let me know in the comments below or on twitter.

    Live Streaming
We all know I like to keep you guys updated on all my game development efforts. I updated the blog with my progress, I have a current status in the blog that I update. The next logical step is to show you guys directly and live what I'm doing. Nowadays live streaming is very simple to do. So the question is would you guys want to see a live stream here and there of me working on games? Obviously I would have to cut out certain things that I wouldn't want to show you. But again let me know what you think of this.

    Baby Pokemon Incoming!
Originally with PTD1 to PTD2 transfers I wanted to go in pokedex order, but after last week of kind of picking and choosing I think it's more fun that way. So while reading some comments of last week's blog I noticed somebody mentioned magmar and electabuzz and that got me thinking. They have something in common which is they have prevolutions! (They also have evolutions but we won't get them this week) As a third pokemon to transfer it made sense to bring in Jynx which also has a preevolution! Babies for everyone I say!

    Dawn Stone and other items
Like the week before I plan to bring the Dawn Stone to let you evolve your female Snorunts into Froslass. I don't however plan to add many more evolution items in the next week as I want to feature them in the story at other points in the game. So you won't be evolving your Magmars and Electabuzzes any time soon. Please don't ask :)

    Mystery Gift
This week it looks like it's Dark's turn. Vote on the poll to see who will be the shiny Mystery Gift and who will be the Shiny Giveaway! I will hopefully be able to slow down people that are getting more than one set by using multiple accounts. Stay tuned.

Soft Level Cap Increased to 30! Plus get the moves that are in the game!
I'm also increasing the soft level cap to 30! (Aren't I nice?) I'm also changing it so that if the move is in the game then your pokemon can learn it regardless of the soft cap. This is something I've been wanting to do for a while and this week I will be tackling it. What this means is that lets say I increase the level cap to 30 like I am this week that means Gible can learn Dragon Claw at level 27. This is great news for somebody with a gible but what about somebody with a Gabite or Garchomp? They learn it at level 33. So before this meant that even if the move was there ready to be used, you didn't have access to it due to the soft cap. So I'm removing that limitation. If the move is ready to be used in the game then your pokemon will learn it. I will however be sticking to adding new moves based on the soft cap so keep that in mind.

    Cosmoids Progress
I'm pretty happy with my Cosmoids progress for last week I got the creature swapping mechanic down and I"m pleased with my efforts. Sadly I didn't get much time to work on the new move mechanic but I hope to crush that down this week. In games usually you spend a lot of time building the base of the game. The core mechanics that the player will have to keep doing over and over so I take great care in trying to make these the best that they can be. Once you nail the basics down it is all about making the content which goes by a lot faster. In ptd this is similar to how long it took ptd2 to release and then how quickly I can make new moves now. Patience is the key but after you pass that stage everything starts speeding up.

    Weekly Progress
Ah yes, the progress part of the blog. Like every week I will post the details of everything I'm working on and then throughout the week I will update it as I make things. So keep checking back and cheer me on as I complete the task for this week.

Current Status: Not Working. Update is out!
