Birthday Legendary!
Every year on my the week of my birthday I like to give out a very special Legendary Pokemon as the Mystery Gift. So the time has come again (my birthday is on November 26) and it so happens that this week the Mystery Gift type is Dragon. So I present to you the Mystery Gift for this week.....
Kyurem!
The Mystery Gift will be a regular/shadow Kyurem and the Giveaway will be a Shiny Kyurem! I hope you guys enjoy this special gift!

Double Gym Battle (This part of the update has been pushed to the next one due to my birthday and the Thanks Giving Holiday)
This week we arrive in Olivine City and find that there is something happening in the city. Both Chuck (the Cianwood City Gym Leader) and Jasmine (the Olivine City Gym Leader) will be there. Will you be able to defeat both of them battling you at the same time?

Old Data Wipe
In about 6 months from now we will be doing a data wipe to any accounts that aren't used in 6 months. If you are a regular player then you will be fine just make sure you log in every once in a while so you don't lose your accounts. There is a lot of old data in the system that is just sitting there collecting dust and slowing everything down. Your data will only be wiped if you do not log in for a whole 6 months or more. If you log in every 3 months or every 5 months you will be fine.

Sam and Dan Games Subscriber
Next year we will be coming out with a subscriber service. The service will cost about 1.99 a month with special discounts if you pay for a whole year in advance. The service will bring many benefits to the subscribers with more being added over time. Some of the benefits will include a higher shiny encounter rate, more breeding spots for breeding, better breeding items, a subscriber only server to ensure that subscribers have no problems playing at even the busiest times, automatically receive giveaway pokemon without having to be on at the right time and more! Future games will also give out benefits to subscribers and like I said we will be adding more and more over time.

What will change with the Subscriber service? Is the game no longer free?
The game will ALWAYS be free! You can do everything you can do now for free. The subscriber feature is just for players that want to support us plus get some great EXTRA perks. The game will stay just how it is now for free players.

So will non subscribers still get a chance at giveaways? What if you have over 500 subscribers?
The subscribers will automatically receive the giveaway pokemon without entering a code. This means that the 500 that I giveaway will still be available to non subscribers and only non-subscribers. Subscribers will not be able to enter the code into their account since they already get them automatically.

If you like our games and want to support us this will be a great way for you to get many benefits from it! Stay Tuned!

Sam and Dan Games: Fundraiser! Phase 4

Help us keep making games and earn awesome prizes like Shiny Rayquaza, Cosmoid Starters for PTD 2, Shiny Heatran and Shiny Pokemon X and Y Legendaries!

          Our Goal: $50,000

          Phase 4 of the Fundraiser!
Phase 4 of the Fundraiser starts this week. This will be the last phase of the fundraiser which will end on January. If you want to obtain these legendaries and cosmoid for your account make sure you get them before then. I'm happy to announce the new prizes for the new tiers of funding. They will be shiny Yveltal and Xerneas from Pokemon X and Y! If you donated 20 or more you will get to pick one of them and get 3 of the one that you pick (very useful for trading). If you donated 25 or more you will get another 3 of the one that you pick. For reaching 25 you get 6 total and potentially 3 of each.

          Fairy Type Arrives!
Because of the new Fundraiser tier and adding Xerneas I will introduce the Fairy type into PTD 2. I will add the type to all pokemon that now fall under it (ex. Togepi, Jigglypuff, etc) but I won't be giving them all their attacks this week. Only the ones that they share with Xerneas. Also I'll be changing other types that changed in generation 6.

          Saving problems
With more people playing the game the server sometimes has trouble keeping up which causes save files not to work. This week I will make it so if your save file works you can still save without it telling you that you saved somewhere else.

          Ecruteak City
In an effort to push the story along we have made it to Ecruteak City rather quickly with 3 routes being created last week. This week I'm bringing the Gym match versus Morty. Morty encounters Shadow Pokemon that were brought by Mewthree's destruction. What will happen next?!

          Mystery Gift
This week we will have the final type, Normal. So we will go straight into voting for it.

Sam and Dan Games: Fundraiser! Phase 3

Help us keep making games and earn awesome prizes like Shiny Rayquaza, Cosmoid Starters for PTD 2 and Shiny Heatran!
                  Our Goal: $50,000

Back to the Story! Goldenrod's conclusion!
We got the new server up and running! Hopefully things are running smoothly for all of you. This is a nice step in the right direction but it is not perfect yet. It took roughly two weeks to move everything over and transfer all the data. I had to do it alone so my apologies for the long delay between significant updates. At the very least I wanted to make sure you guys got Mystery Gifts and giveaways.

On a side note the Funding reached 20% wooo! Pretty soon I'll be adding more prizes but for now I will focus on PTD2 since we had 2 weeks of no new content.

So like the title of the blog says we will be concluding Goldenrod City this update. You will finish off Team Rocket and open of the poke mart which will have a large amount of new items to buy. It will also open up the other places even though some of them you won't be able to enter due to the destruction Team Rocket caused.

                  Percentage Damage Moves Change
There will be a change in how damage in moves like Fire Spin, Leech Seed, and statuses like Burn and Poison works. Instead of being based on a certain attack power they will be based on a percentage of health of the tower doing the attack. The reason it's based on the tower doing the attack instead of the target like the game is that if it's based on the target it will either do too much damage (like on bosses) or too little damage (when battling low level enemies). As an example Leech Seed will now do 1/8 of your total health as damage to the enemy instead of what it does currently. This should make these moves and statuses stronger than they are now.

                  Mystery Gift
Like every week we will have a Mystery Gift and a giveaway. This week Ground won and right now Hippopota and Numel are in the lead!

Lastly I want to give the first 50 people that read this a special giveaway for shiny Larvitar! The code is.... larvitar All larvitar have been taken! Thanks guys!

                                  New Server Setup
We got the new server last week but this week it's all about setting it up. The process of setting it up starts with transferring all the files over to the new server. After that all the databases have to be recreated and all the data from the old database needs to be moved over to the new one. This means that there will be a day or a couple of days that the trading center will be down while I make all the transfers. This also means that I need to spend a large amount of time making sure everything is working as it should and so there won't be a big content update for ptd2 this week.

                                  Mystery Gift
There will be a mystery gift and a giveaway as always. This week Flying won the poll and it looks like woobat and rufflet are winning so far Rufflet and Emolga won! Keep the votes coming!

                                  Working Behind the Scenes
We got some fun Cosmoid related things coming in the horizon. The artists, Joel, Evan and Kevin, are all hard at work on different projects and I hope that soon enough we will start rolling out the first one of them. I hope that I can work hard and fast to bring you these things as soon as possible.

Sam and Dan Games: Fundraiser! Phase 3
Help us keep making games and earn awesome prizes like Shiny Rayquaza, Cosmoid Starters for PTD 2 and Shiny Heatran!
                                          Our Goal: $50,000

                                          Making things work better
Over the years the performance of our servers have never been what I like to call stable. I feel like the game has always been playable but there are many times when it is too slow or it's almost impossible to log in. Don't even mention the Pokemon center website! This week I will begin taking steps to improve the performance of the game. Dan and I decided to get a separate server for the Pokemon Center. This means that players login into the game and saving in the game won't impact the performance of the trading and vice versa. This is just the first step towards a more reliable game experience.

Game Corner and Bicycle shop open!
Yes, you heard right! This next update will have you battling Team Rocket to open up the Game Corner and bicycle shop! Which means after you beat them you will be able to get a bicycle (free of charge!) and play in the game corner. This time around you will be able to play the Voltorb Card Flip game right inside of the game instead of having to go to the pokemon center website to play there.

For the rewards I have also expanded those from the ones found in the game. You will be able to get the following TMs, Pokemon and Items:

TMs: Blizzard, Thunder, Fire Blast, Substitute, Swords Dance, Rest, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Dragon Rage, Hyper Beam, Double Team, Psychic, Shadow Ball, Iron Tail, Endure, Hidden Power, Gyro Ball, and Giga Impact

Items: Silk Scarf, Wide Lens, Zoom Lens, Smoke Ball, Charcoal, Miracle Seed, Mystic Water, Yellow Flute and Metronome

Pokemon: Murkrow, Wobbuffet, Slugma, Houndour, Larvitar

With the Pokemon Rewards I looked at what you could earn in both the Goldenrod City Game Corner and the Celadon Game Corner for this generation. I removed the Kanto pokemon since you can get those on PTD1 and I added Gen 2 pokemon that could only be caught in the Kanto region, since this game will no go to the Kanto region.

Like I mentioned before Goldenrod City is a big city so it will take more than one update to cover all the material I want to happen there. This won't be the last update for this city before we are able to move on to the next place.

                                          Mystery Gift and Giveaway
Like every week we will be having a Mystery Gift and a Giveaway, it looks like Foongus is beating out the grass starters but we will see how it turns out in the end. Look forward to it!

                                                                    Weekly Update
Welcome once again to another week at Sam and Dan Games. Let's get it started!

                                                                    Game Rebalance
It's about that time again to rebalance the game. The problem that happens is that many of you are higher level so I tend to make the latest levels be a lot harder than they should be at that stage of the game. The problem is that as I add even more content new players can get stuck since the difficulty curve might be too high. What I do to rebalance is start a new game and try to play all the levels. The moment where I feel like I need to start grinding to move on then that level needs to be made easier. Either make the enemy be lower level, or have less health. Ideally in the final game you would never need to grind to beat the story mode.

I'm also retroactively adding TMs for the Gym leaders that you might have beaten.

                                                                    Legendary Transfers
Last blog I asked in the comments what you wanted to see for this update. Some of you wanted to see the Legendary Beast from PTD1 to be transferred over. So this week we will see Raikou, Entei, Suicune and Victini be added to the transfer list!

                                                                    New Moves
I won't be able to reach Soft Level cap 37 this week but I will add some of the moves from it, plus a few extra fun moves. Are there any specific moves that you want to be added next week? Let me know in the comments below.

                                                                    Ilex Forest
The next map will be Ilex Forest. There won't be any new pokemon in it but there will be some pokemon in the wild that we hadn't seen before so that means new behaviours for them. You can expect to battle a pesky Farfetch'd and gain access to HM Cut.

                                                                    Mystery Gift
Like most weeks, there will be a mystery gift this week. It looks like Ice is winning right now. It is interesting because if Ice wins, there aren't many pure or primary ice type pokemon left. There might not be a choice to vote for.

                                                                    Cosmoid Update

                                                                      Back in Action!

                                                                      PTD2 Update 1.49 Released!
I just finished a new update it contains a lot of goodies for you guys and gals.

                                                                      • Pokemon Size Adjustments - This was a long time coming. Usually I would resize pokemon manually and more or less estimate how big or small they should be. What I did was changed it so the sizes are automatically figured out using programming instead of me doing it manually. From 0 to 10 feet units will scale at a faster pace than from 10 or higher feet. If it all scales the same you end up with giant Steelix. So I used rattata to figure out 1 foot and your character represents 5 feet. Then I took my Steelix size and made that the measure for how the bigger pokemon should scale. The outcome is that sizes should be more consistent now. Some pokemon got smaller and some got bigger but should be accurate to the game.
                                                                      • Soft Level Cap Increased to 36 - Added 11 new attacks to reach the 36 soft level cap. Please note that pokemon that can learn these attacks will be able to learn them even if they are learned at a higher level than the soft cap.
                                                                        • X-Scissor, Megahorn, Shadow Claw, Flash Cannon, Dizzy Punch, Psycho Cut, Whirlpool, Stone Edge, Venoshock, Blaze Kick, and Sludge Bomb.

We had a crazy week last week, both in a good and bad way. Let's start with the bad. So instead of telling you the story how it unfolded I will just tell you what the problem was and how it caused all the issues that we had. Okay. So Databases need indexes. Imagine you have a giant book and it has no index. How would you find that page you are looking for without having to go through the whole book? You can't! So I had a tiny database (the one that keeps track of what events you had done in the story) that was missing an index. Initially the database was so small that it didn't matter. But as the game grew in size and in users this database grew. It has over 2 million entries and so every day as the database grew so did the slowdown. It got so slow that our host suspended our account. I told them to put it back up so I could disable all logins while I fixed the problem. I was really conflicted about all this. I'm no expert on databases or server administration so I had very little idea on where to start. Luckily I had bought this book called High Performance MySQL: Optimization, Backups, and Replication. While I didn't have the time to read the whole book or follow everything it had to say, it did give me some ideas on trying to find the problem and how to fix it. After doing some test to see how long each thing took to load I found that loading events was taking way too long even when I was the only user playing the game, which brought the discovery of the missing index on that database. Other than that I made some upgrades to the database engines (I changed from mysam to innodb, for those with database knowledge) that should let more people in at a time. There might be some side effects to these changes that I will have to fix but I'm pretty happy that we are somewhat back to working order.

The good stuff is the new content that I was able to bring to the game. I finally put in running shoes into the game which let you move at twice the speed. (Your pokemon will also move fast, I did have a version where your pokemon wasn't as fast and he would be left behind) You can get the shoes by talking to an old man in Cherrygrove City after you defeat Zapdos there. Another big and daunting task that I had was to add fishing. I actually go the chance to stream while I was making the fishing part and frankly I had no idea how I was going to add fishing. Luckily I'm pretty quick at thinking about how to solve problems and so I thought of a way to add it in and it worked out pretty well. You can now get an old rod or good rod by defeating the fisher man on the second part of Route 32 (Read the FAQ page for more detailed info). Once you have a rod you can go to any water source available in the game and fish on it (press spacebar or z) this will trigger a battle. Things like which rod you are using, which location you are in, time of day will affect who you get to battle with. I basically set it up to mimic the actual game. I'm really happy with how it turned out so I hope you guys can enjoy it.

On top of all of this I added all the generation 1 pokemon that you can capture in PTD2 to the PTD1 to PTD2 transfers. This includes: Jigglypuff, Wigglypuff, Zubat, Golbat, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebell, Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Gastly, Haunter, Gengar, Poliwag, Poliwrath, Krabby, Kingler, Staryu and Starmie. As I do every week there was also a Mystery Gift and a Giveaway pokemon. The Mystery Gift was electric ghost type Rotom and the giveaway was Plusle and Minun. If you got the code in time you would get 2 of each Plusle and Minun. One male and one female.

Last but not least Cosmoids had a nice update. I added more losing conditions, if you let enough bug creatures pass you will lose the level. You can tell how many lives you have left by the heart graphic on the top left. Evan, one of our freelance artist, also did a revision on the grass graphic for the first level. While I thought the original ones looked fine, Dan thought they needed more work. And so Evan did the job and they look great! The other thing I added was a fainting animation to the units. Instead of disappearing you will now see them flip on their backs and then flash before they disappear. These types of details go a long way in making a game. Each of them bringing us closer to a full game.

                                                                      What's happening this week:

                                                                      Pokemon Center Bugs
I need detailed information about the Pokemon Center Bugs with Breeding, Trading and Picking up pokemon. The more step by step information you can give me the better.

                                                                      Mystery Gift
Like every week we will have a mystery gift and a giveaway for the runner up of the poll. You have one day to vote for which of the remaining types should be the new mystery gift. Then I will post specific pokemon that can be the mystery gift and giveaway.

                                                                      PTD1 to PTD2 Transfers
My goal this week is to add a lot of Generation 1 Pokemon into PTD2. So this week I plan to add: Vulpix, Ninetails, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Paras, Parasect, Venonat, Venomoth, Diglett, Dugtrio, Meowth, Persian, Psyduck, Golduck, Mankey, Primeape, Growlithe, Arcanine, Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Machop, Machoke, and Machamp. Adding these will make it so that you can get more than half of the Generation 1 Pokemon into PTD2!

                                                                      Sun Stone
Since we are adding the Oddish family and Bellossom is part of Generation 2 then I'm also adding the Sun Stone so that Gloom can evolve into Bellossom!

Cosmoids Level Select Screen and Level 2
For Cosmoids this week I want to start work on Level 2. I really want each level to feel different than the others so each level will take some time to create. On level 2 is when you finally get your first creature, but please note that you won't be able to save just yet. Since we will have multiple levels we also need a level select screen. Very similar to PTD1 there will be different chapters. I'm looking forward to making this!

                                                                      Weekly Progress

My Status: Not Working. Not Streaming. http://www.justin.tv/samsndgames

Pokemon Tower Defense was first released to the Android Marketplace on March 10, 2011!  I remember releasing it and never expecting it to grow as big as it did, and I'm always very grateful to all of you guys and gals for making this happen! My goal for the game was to finish the story mode in a year or less and while I didn't complete my goal I think we got pretty close!

As a special gift the next Mystery Gift will be...... Regular Mew! This will be your first chance to get Regular Mew, after a week the gift will change and Mew will be added in the game with a secret way of finding it.

The Last Update! (To rule them all?)

So going back to completing the game... the next update will complete the game! Yes, you heard (read) right! The next update will contain all the remaining levels:
                                                                      • Power Plant (Zapdos, Electabuzz (Red Only), Magnemite) (0%)

Adding the crucial Lickitung NPC trade to the new level (0%)

But as you might have guessed this update will take longer than a week. How long will it take? I don't even know myself which is why I will keep updating the blog with my progress towards finishing it. I really don't want to try to rush the ending since I want it to be very special. The reason I'm not releasing it little by little is that I really want you guys to experience it all at once.

                                                                      Random Game Sequels

When I got my internet back and saw the huge pile of emails that I have there I saw a couple that were really interesting. Mostly regarding a game that I didn't make but it's called Pokemon TD 2: Kanto. If any of you were wondering I had nothing to do with this game at all. If you want to know what I think about it, then my response is... neat. I don't own Pokemon so the fact that somebody made this game doesn't bother me and I think that it is pretty flattering that somebody decided to make it, it's interesting to me to see the changes that he made to the game and friendly competition is always welcomed :) On a side note, my sequel will be about a million times better ;p

                                                                      Pokemon Tower Defense 2

Speaking of sequels! You guys made it loud and clear in the last poll! 56% of you want instant capture with the pokeballs. Looking at all the comments and arguments made, I totally agree with you! What I will do is keep the 100% catch rate when weakened but still have multiple pokeballs, I'll think of ways to implement them without letting you capture the pokemon when they have really high health and then I will present the idea to you again.

For PTD 2 I really want to introduce some elements to the game that will make the game fell fresh while still retaining what made PTD well PTD. Here are 3 new elements that I want you to look at and tell me what you think.

                                                                      1. The "candy" can move - When I say the "candy" I mean the thing that the attacking units will be after, so it can be candy, a pokemon, an egg, etc. In PTD 1 the candy was always stationary. Only the enemy could move it and then you could manipulate the enemy (using moves like whirlwind) and then defeat them to change its location. In PTD 2 sometimes the "candy" will try to return to it's original spot once dropped. Sometimes it might be trying to leave the level by itself. Adding this new functionality will enable all kinds of new levels.
                                                                      2. Blocking or Unblocking paths - A new mechanic that I want to add for PTD 2 is being able to block or unblock a path that your enemies or allies can go in. An example is the enemy has direct access to the "candy" you can block their path but putting an obstacle in their way (How exactly you would do this is still up in the air) and now they have to down a long way to reach the "candy" giving you more of a chance to defeat them. In the same way you might want to unblock a path, you might have to use attacks to destroy the the obstacle or have your pokemon carry the obstacle away.
                                                                      3. Special Abilities - Another feature that many modern Tower Defense games have is some sort of special ability that you can use to help you defeat the enemies. In a lot of game this will be a Meteor attack. Something that you can click and drag to the enemies to unleash upon them. Normally you will have to wait for this move to recharge, charging it might be done by your towers attacking or just naturally over time. The special abilities will vary based on what your current team is.
So that is what I have in mind, some new mechanics that will enable all kinds of different new levels. Tell me what you think on the comments below.

                                                                      Creature Universe Game (ANPO)

This game is always shifting, changing, evolving in my head. Recently I decided it was time to start putting down some notes on paper to really start to brainstorm what this game will be about and what ideas I want to explore in it. Today I bring you some of my notes plus I open it up to you guys to tell me what you think this game could be about. Note that while I read every single comment I can't comment or agree with all of them but I do read them and they do affect my decisions and way of thinking. So they are more than welcome.  While in the bathroom (a lot of interesting ideas usually come up in the bathroom) I started to write down my thoughts.
                                                                      • First I want the emphasis of the game to be the world and creature simulation.
                                                                      • The world is vast and has many secrets scattered all around for players to find (Think Zelda, Mario Bros)
                                                                      • Creatures are dynamic and feel alive
When I reached that note I stopped and I said what does that mean? How do you make something feel alive? After some thought I came up with an answer. (There are many answers to this question, which I want you guys to tell me what you think it can be.) My answer isn't some sort of ultimate answer but just what I came up with. I thought that for a creature to feel alive when you see it out in some area would be that the creature must:
                                                                      • React how you would expect it to - This is a very important idea. One of the top reason I play videogames is to see how the game reacts to my actions. Imagine punching somebody in a game and having them gain health instead of losing it. That reaction would be totally unexpected but weird and bad in my opinion. Cause and effect must make sense for a player. So to make the creatures feel alive they have to react to you in ways that you would expect them to. If you run at a bird in real life, that bird would most likely fly away. If it doesn't I usually freak out, is the bird used to humans/ isn't afraid of them? How the creatures react to your character, surrounding and your actions is a big part of making the world and creatures feel alive, in my opinion.
                                                                      • Their actions must vary - Nothing ruins the illusion of something feeling alive more than seeing a pattern. If the creatures keeps repeating the same pattern over and over you just see it as a system but if the creature does something that makes sense but isn't following some sort of pattern then you really start believe it is thinking about what to do rather than following a set of rules. A certain amount of randomness must be introduced into the creatures but also some rules since animals aren't random but they follow their instincts. (Just to be clear the randomness plays out when they are in the wild and not once you "captured" one. Once you capture a creature they won't randomly run away or anything and they will obey your commands.)
                                                                      • They have objectives - The last thing is that these creatures are a step above animals, they are a little bit smarter and have a wide range of emotions that they will express. Because of this creatures must always have an objective that they are trying to follow. I have a long list of over 20 objectives that creatures would have at any given time. Some examples are:
                                                                        • Locating Food
                                                                        • Having fun
                                                                        • Running away from something
                                                                        • Protecting something
                                                                        • Gathering with others
                                                                        • Looking for a fight
So to me these are some of the things that the creatures in this game must have to make them feel alive in the way that I want them to feel. What do you think would make the creatures feel alive in this game? Let me know in the comments below!

                                                                      And More!

The goal from the very beginning for Dan and I was to make fun games that we liked and we thought it we liked the games there must be people out there that will like them to. That is still our goal. We also wanted to be very open with our fans and let them in on the process of developing games. We really strive to be very open with talking and listening with you guys because in the end if you guys don't enjoy our game then we failed. I want to thank you guys for the continued support, this first year has been a roller coaster ride with mostly ups than downs and we wouldn't be here with you. I would still be working a desk job wondering if my games would ever take off. I'm really looking forward to the ending of PTD, I'm extremely impressed and excited for anything HTD, and also excited for PTD 2 and Project ANPO. Let's make this next year even better than the last!

                                                                      Sincerely,
                                                                      Samuel Otero

                                                                      Search This Blog
